8 Days From Tanger to Desert Merzouga
Tour Itinerary
DAY 1 TANGER – RIF MOUNTAINS – CHEFCHAOUEN
Our tour from Tangier to the Sahara desert at Merzouga will start as soon as you are met with your tour guide in the Tangier port. We will then start driving through the Rif Mountain in the direction of Chefchaouen town. Chefchaouen is a town built by the Muslim and Jew refugees from Spain, who came to settle down here during the 15th century. This is what makes the city one of the best destinations if you’re looking to see what an Andalusian influence in architecture would look like in a Moroccan city. Another main thing that attracts people from all over the world to come see Chefchaouen is the beauty and quietness of its Old Medina alleyways; in addition to the unique vibrant blue color that coats its buildings. In the main square of the town, there are many cafes and restaurants that offer amazing panoramic views of the entire city. 8 days from tanger
DAY 2 CHEFCHAOUEN- VOLUBILIS -FEZ
Today we will continue our tour by heading towards Fez city, driving by amazing landscapes of vast green fields and quiet hills. In order to have lunch, we will stop at a town called Ouazane, then we will continue our way until we reach Volubilis. Now Volubilis is a ruins town of the Great Roman Empire, dating back to the 3rd century BC. This archeological site is known for having the most well-preserved ruins and mosaics from that time period. A neighboring town to Volubilis is Moulay Idriss Zerhoune, which a spiritual place that is home to the Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss, the ruler of the first Islamic Dynasty in Morocco. We may stop there for a little bit to enjoy a cup of mint tea, before finally continuing to Fez. We will get there during the evening, then we will spend the night at a hotel/Riad.
DAY 3 FEZ MEDINA GUIDED TOUR
We will begin our guided tour of the city of Fez at around 10 AM after having breakfast. At first we will be walking around the streets and alleyways of the Old Medina, then we will visit the impressive gates of the royal palace, and what is considered to be the first Mellah to be built in Morocco. After that, we will go walk around the Attarin Souk, where you will find all sorts of artisanal products on display. After we are done with that, we will leave the Souk through the Bab Boujeloud gate which is in itself a stunning masterpiece of Moroccan craftsmanship. Following this, we will pay a visit to the Dar Albatha museum, known for its unique display of traditional Moroccan arts. We may have a typical Moroccan lunch at a restaurant in the Medina if you would like, after which we will go to explore all the monumets that made Fez known as the cultural and spiritual capital of Morocco. I am of course talking about the oldest university in the world, Al Quaraouine University and all of its libraries and accompanying schools such as Al Attarin Madrassa. Finally, you can have an interesting dinner accompanied by Belly Dancers if you wish to.
DAY 4 FEZ – ERFOUD – ERG CHEBBI DESERT CAMP
Today we will start heading south on our journey to the Sahara desert, but first, we will go through the Middle Atlas region where we will meet the town of Ifrane, the Azrou cedar forests (populated by wild Macaque monkeys) and then the town of Midelt. This is where the landscape will start turning into a more Saharian atmosphere, as we will reach the massive palm groves of Ziz Valley. Finally, we will arrive at the city of Erfoud where we will spend the night.
DAY 5 FREE DAY DESERT DUNES DISCOVERY
Today you will be free to choose what desert activity you want to do. We can also pay a visit to the Khamlia village where you can some live performances of the spiritual Gnaoua music.
DAY 6 DESERT CAMP – ALNIF – TODRA GORGE
After waking up in time to admire the breathtaking desert sunrise, we will ride our camels back to the hotel to get a delicious breakfast and get the chance to shower. After that we will continue our desert exploration by going to Tinjdad, to discover an old underground irrigation system that still functions to this day in the Jorf oasis. We will then head to the breathtaking Todra gorges where we will have lunch. This site is a very famous for attracting climbers from all over the world, because of its 300 meters long gorges. You can explore the area by walking along the peaceful Todra River. Finally, we will spend the night at a local Kasbah hotel.
DAY 7 TODGHA GORGE – DADES – SKOURA – OUARZAZATE
This next day we will be exploring the beautiful valleys of the High Atlas Mountains, starting with the Dades valley. Dades valley is known for its unique rock formation and impressive fields of fruits and nuts. Then another valley we will explore today will be the Roses valley, known for its production of the Damask rose, used in cosmetics and medicine. This is the main source of income for families in the region, so there are a lot of rose cooperatives in the area, mainly run by women. There is also an annual Rose festival organized in April. Finally, we will be driving through the palm groves of Skoura to reach Ouarzazate where we will be spending the night.
Day 8 Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah – Marrakech.
For the last day of our tour, we will explore the city of Ouarzazate-the Hollywood of Morocco- that is famous for being home to the 3 biggest and most important filming studios in Morocco. Then we will go to the nearby Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou after a possible visit of the Kasbah of Taourirt. Ait Ben Haddou is a recognized UNESCO world heritage site, famous for being the setting location for many big international movies and series (Game of Thrones for instance). After we spend some time exploring the streets of the Kasbah, we will visit our final Kasbah for the day. That would be the Kasbah of Pacha Glaoui, who used to be a very important man in the region. Finally, we will arrive to Marrakech after driving through the famous Tizin Tichka mountain pass. 8 days from tanger
